How does /summon work?
The /summon command creates a mob or entity at the specified coordinates. By default the mob appears at your position (~ ~ ~). You can specify exact coordinates and NBT data to customize the mob.
Mob types
In Minecraft there are hostile (zombies, skeletons, creepers), passive (cows, pigs, villagers), neutral (wolves, bees, iron golems) and boss (Wither, Ender Dragon) mobs. All are available via /summon.
Mob name
Using the CustomName NBT tag you can give a mob a name that is displayed above its head. This is equivalent to using a Name Tag, but without the need to craft an anvil.
Advanced settings
With NBT data you can create mobs with armor, weapons, effects, without AI (NoAI:1), invisible, glowing and with custom attributes. The /summon command is one of the most powerful tools for map making.
