Which version to choose?

For a new server, the latest stable version is recommended. For Forge mods, the popular versions are 1.12.2, 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2 and 1.20.1. PvP servers often use 1.8.9. When choosing, consider the availability of the plugins and mods you need.

Which core to choose?

Paper — the best choice for most servers with plugins. Forge — if you need mods. Fabric — for lightweight modifications with better performance. Velocity — for networks of multiple servers.

Java version

Starting with Minecraft 1.17, Java 16+ is required, from 1.18 — Java 17, and from 1.20.5 — Java 21. Older versions (1.12.2, 1.16.5) run on Java 8. Forge may require a different Java version — see the “Java (Forge)” column. On MineRENT, the required Java is installed automatically.

Updating the server
