How much RAM do you need?

The amount of RAM depends on the server core, the number of players and the installed modifications. A Vanilla server for 5 players is fine with 1.5 GB, while a heavy modded pack for 50 players may require 16 GB or more.

Server cores

Paper/Spigot — optimized cores for plugins, consume less RAM. Forge — for mods, requires more resources. Fabric — a lightweight core for mods. Heavy modpacks (RLCraft, ATM) need 4-6 GB as a baseline.

Impact of plugins

Each plugin uses a certain amount of RAM. Lightweight plugins (EssentialsX, LuckPerms) take about 10-30 MB. Heavy ones (Dynmap, Citizens, WorldEdit when actively used) can take 100-500 MB. The more plugins, the more RAM you need.

Optimization tips

Use Paper instead of Vanilla — it consumes 20-40% less RAM. Adjust the view-distance (6-8 instead of 10), limit the number of mobs in bukkit.yml, remove unused plugins. When RAM runs short you get lag and the TPS drops below 20.
