How does /spawnpoint work?

The /spawnpoint command sets the respawn point for a specific player. Syntax: /spawnpoint <player> [x] [y] [z]. Without coordinates — it sets it at the current position. After death the player will appear at this point.

Difference from a bed

A bed also sets a spawn point, but only when used. The /spawnpoint command works without a bed and does not require a block to bind to. However, /spawnpoint is tied to the dimension — a spawn in the Nether will not work from the Overworld.

World spawn

To set a global spawn point (for all new players) use /setworldspawn <x> <y> <z>. This is a separate command from /spawnpoint that affects the default spawn location.

Use on servers

On servers /spawnpoint is useful for creating respawn systems: binding to a base, to a PvP arena, to a lobby. Via command blocks you can automatically set the spawn when entering a certain zone.
