How does /enchant work?

The /enchant command enchants the item in the player’s hand. Syntax: /enchant <player> <enchantment> [level]. The level cannot exceed the enchantment’s maximum (for example, Sharpness — max 5).

Weapon enchantments

Sharpness (sharpness) — +damage to all. Smite (smite) — +damage to undead. Knockback (knockback) — pushes enemies away. Fire Aspect (fire_aspect) — sets the target on fire. Looting (looting) — more loot from mobs.

Armor enchantments

Protection (protection) — against all damage. Fire Protection, Blast Protection, Projectile Protection — specialized. Thorns (thorns) — returns damage. Feather Falling (feather_falling) — reduces fall damage.

Incompatibilities

Some enchantments do not combine: Sharpness/Smite/Bane of Arthropods, Fortune/Silk Touch, Protection/Fire Protection/Blast Protection, Infinity/Mending. With /enchant you cannot exceed the maximum level — for that use /give with NBT.
